Giorgos Giakoumakis says Atlanta United fans have changed him

Giorgos Giakoumakis has praised how well Atlanta United fans have welcomed him to the club, with the attacker saying that the support has helped him adapt.

Speaking to 90min, the former Celtic superstar claimed that Atlanta fans have been key in Giakoumakis settling so well into life in MLS, with the forward one of the most prolific strikers in the division this year.

The Five Stripes are renowned for being one of the most passionate fanbases in all of MLS and North America, and Giakoumakis has certainly felt the love since joining the club earlier this year.

The 28-year-old has been in impressive for for Atlanta, with Giakoumakis and Thiago Almada forming quite the impressive partnership for Gonzalo Pineda’s side.

And according to Giakoumakis, Atlanta’s fans have been key in helping him change his game. The striker said: “Many, many factors contributed in order to make me feel like home and to make it just much easier and much faster [adjustment].”

“One of the reasons was, of course, was the people from Atlanta, the board and the people around the team, but also the fans really showed me that they appreciate me at first and how they show me every time that they love me.”

Giakoumakis could soon become an Atlanta icon

Atlanta fans are a group who are strongly attached to their best and most passionate players, and Giakoumakis could fall into this category if he continues to perform.

With the Greek star in the prime of his career, Giakoumakis has the potential to become an icon for the Five Stripes if he sticks around and continues to find the back of the net.

With ten MLS goals already this season, Giakoumakis can only improve from here, with the forward a key reason why Atlanta remain in the MLS playoff picture.
